COUNCIL APPROVES SANCTIONS - The U.N. Security Council votes Monday, August 6, 1990 to implement sweeping trade and military sanctions against Iraq as a direct response to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. The ambassador of Iraq sits at the upper end of the circular table while the ambassador of Kuwait sits at the lower end. The final vote was 13 - 0 for sanctions, with Yemen and Cuba abstaining.
